What is 5G and What is the Future of 5G in Malaysia?

What is 5G?

5G is the latest generation of cellular technology.

It is meant to deliver faster, more reliable, and lower latency connectivity than earlier generations. It is set to revolutionise our everyday experiences and open up a future of unparalleled possibilities.

1G vs 2G vs 3G vs 4G vs 5G

1G - Came into inception in 1980. Features - mobile calls only at 2 Kbps of speed.

2G - Came into inception in 1990. Features - mobile calls and SMS at 64 Kbps of speed.

3G - Came into inception in 2000s. Features mobile calls, SMS, MMS, web browsing at 2 Mbps of speed.

4G - Came into inception in 2010s. Features mobile calls, SMS, MMS, web browsing, video calls at 1 Gbps of speed.

5G - Features - all that you can do with 4G network as well as augmented reality, virtual reality and artificial intelligence.

How Will 5G Enable Unparalleled Possibilities for the Future?

  • 10x to 100x faster speeds, thereby making downloading and uploading large data or content a breeze
  • 1000x more connections than 4G. One million connected devices per square kilometre
  • 5x quicker response meaning sending and receiving information is now more efficient
  • 5x more energy efficient compared to earlier generations

5G – A Game Changer

5G will drive the next evolution in connectivity to deliver groundbreaking solutions and redefine a new standard in wireless networking.

Elevate your everyday experiences

Setting the stage for more personalised and connected experiences that are wholly immersive and engaging.

Towards a more digitally inclusive society

Ensuring there’s fair and equitable connectivity for all in order to bridge the urban-rural digital divide.

Entire industries transformed and reimagined

Creating a strong foundation for enterprises to be more efficient, autonomous, competitive, and innovative.

What is the future of 5G in Malaysia?

Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) which is wholly owned by the Minister of Finance (Incorporated) has been mandated by the Government of Malaysia to be the single neutral party to undertake the deployment of 5G infrastructure and network nationwide and is licensed under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (the Act) to provide wholesale 5G coverage and capacity to other licensees under the Act.

DNB was established to assist in delivering the following key outcomes in line with the MyDigital aspirations to:
  • Accelerate deployment of 5G infrastructure and network in Malaysia
  • Realise the potential of 5G in Malaysia to spur economic activity
  • Narrow the urban-rural digital divide and improve the current state of infrastructure
  • Avoid duplication of infrastructure and optimise the use of scarce resources
  • Promote service-based competition within the telecommunications industry

5G The Next Wave Of Wireless Connections & Network Provider

5G The Next Wave Of Wireless Connections & Network Provider Introduction: What is 5G? 5G is the next generation of wireless communications. It offers a number of improvements over the current 4G LTE and 3G networks, including faster speeds and lower latency. It also has better coverage in other areas, making it more accessible to people who live in these areas. 5G is not just about faster data speeds though. It also has a number of other advantages that are worth mentioning: - Lower latency for real-time applications like augmented reality or remote operations - Higher capacity for more devices to connect simultaneously - Support for new use cases like streaming virtual reality content - Reduced power consumption   How 5G Networks Will Change the Way You Live, Work & Play? 5G networks will be the next revolution in the world of telecommunications. The new standard will provide faster data transfer rates, lower latency, and increased capacity. The increased speed and low lat...

How does the Malaysian will be benefitted from 5G coverage?

The digital transformation catalysed by 5G coverage stands to create a potential GDP uplift of some RM100 billion and a further 100,000 new jobs by the year 2030. In addition to the long-term GDP and job opportunities, other key socioeconomic benefits include: Enabling the creation of more than 1,000 jobs to support the deployment of the 5G network Facilitating domestic vendor participation by involving them in the supply of various NEP-related services Seeding invaluable knowledge building programmes for industry, government, and academia Developing a 5G Experiential Centre and Innovation Lab to showcase 5G use cases and fast track the development of tech start-ups. DNB has identified several major industries that could be early beneficiaries of the 5G deployment, including oil and gas, ports, tourism, education, healthcare, agriculture, manufacturing, retail, as well as power and utilities.

The Healing Hands of 5G Healthcare

Professor Prokar Dasgupta, Professor of Robotic Surgery and Urological Innovation King’s College, London, led a prostate surgery at Guy’s Hospital, London. While it is a common procedure, Professor Dasgupta was in an entirely different part of the building at the time of the surgery. Present at the operating theatre itself was Malaysian urologist Dr. Warren Lo and an expert medical team. Dr. Lo operated on the patient using the state-of-the-art da Vinci robotic surgical system. He manipulated four modular and highly manoeuvrable robotic arms via a sophisticated, wired control unit. Dasgupta observed the surgery in real time from his location and directed Dr. Lo via an extended reality (XR) interface that “projected” his hand gestures onto a high-resolution video feed that Dr. Warren and his team were looking at in the operating theatre. But Dr. Lo, now a consultant urologist at Gleneagles Hospital, sees a future where not just the tele-mentoring portion of the surgery – but control ove...
